Representative Assembly
The MFT delegates attended the 2008 NYSUT Representative Assembly from April 9th through April 12th. We
attended committee meetings where resolutions, many of which the MFT co-sponsored, were accepted to address
working conditions, health care, and social justice.
In addition, the delegates were very fortunate to listen to the motivational words of the Reverend Joseph
E. Lowery, civil rights activist and co-founder (with Martin Luther King Jr.) of the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference, and of the NEA President Reg Weaver. We are working on a way to share part of their
excellent messages with you, the Massapequa Federation of Teachers.
We also had several politicians join us: Governor Paterson, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, State Attorney
General Andrew Cuomo, NYS Commissioner of Labor Patricia Smith, NYS Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and
Senator Charles Schumer. Senator Clinton and Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno spoke with us by call in.
The passing of the state budget was the focus of our political speakers. All acknowledged the work we do
and appreciated the help and communication sent to the state regarding school funding. In the midst of
economic concerns, it was good to see that all continue to stress the importance of appropriate school
funding. To quote Senator Bruno, "Thank you very much for all the good things you do on behalf of all of
the young people and all of the people in New York State." Bruno went on to say, "The state budget is
truly a victory for every student, parent, teacher and administrator."
Their message needs to be understood here in Massapequa.
One Shot .......... Let's Keep It a Good One
As residents here on Long Island, we all share the concerns of high taxes, gas prices, looming foreclosures,
the overall economy, and the difficulty of making choices in our personal budgets; however, just as the
state prepared a budget to keep its commitment to education, we too must not allow the current economy to
steer us away from keeping Massapequa one of the most desirable school districts on Long Island. Our
children have just one shot at an elementary and secondary education. The finite period of time a person
has to be a part of our public school system cannot be put on hold.
The MFT Endorses Rich Krebs and Christine Perrino for School Board
We are justifiably proud of Massapequa's schools. We have the best faculty and staff,
hard-working and successful students, and involved and dedicated parents. As the union representing
Massapequa's dedicated teaching and secretarial staff, we share a common goal and a common agenda with
this community: making sure Massapequa's schools continue to deliver a first-rate education, while being
careful stewards of the public's hard-earned tax money. Massapequa has made remarkable progress: test
scores are up, our high school students succeed on AP exams and enroll in the best colleges, and Massapequa
is home to some of the most innovative and successful programs on Long Island. It takes everyone to
continue to make Massapequa a district of which to be proud; however, without the support, commitment, and
dedication of our school board, we could see what we have worked so very hard for quickly crumble.
Rich Krebs and Christine Perrino have a track record of leadership, collaboration, and fiscal responsibility.
They offer, on balance, the opportunity for this district to continue to move forward, while keeping
careful watch on our school taxes.
Although, as a union, we may not have always agreed on all issues with Mr. Krebs and Mrs. Perinno, they
have proven to us that their primary goal as board members is to see that the children of Massapequa
receive the best possible education. That is our primary reason for enthusiastically supporting Rich Krebs
and Christine Perrino for school board.
