Did you know ...
When is it appropriate for my building rep to be with me when I am meeting
with my principal or supervisor?"
A building rep should be with you when you are being disciplined, such as when a letter of
reprimand is being placed in your file, or when what is being discussed may lead to discipline.
The latter can be difficult to predetermine so remember that you have the right to respectively
request that a meeting end. Be sure to explain that you feel that there may be disciplinary
actions taken against you and that you would like your building rep present. Also, a representative
must be in attendance if a plan of improvement is being discussed.
It is also recommended that your building rep be with you whenever you are discussing the
possibility that your rights under the contract may have been violated or when the interpretation
of the contract is in dispute.
Before any meeting for which you may have concerns or questions, be sure to speak with your
building rep for guidance.
What should I do if I am being sued civilly or charged criminally in
connection with events related to my job duties?
Public school employees do have the right to defense and indemnification through the school
district. Due to very limited timelines, the district and the MFT must be notified immediately.
Our NYSUT Labor Relations Specialist will be contacted to assist in assuring that the timelines
are met and to bring the case to the NYSUT's Office of General Counsel for guidance.
IMPORTANT SICK BANK INFORMATION
Dear Colleagues,
The following policies will outline the general criteria and procedures by which a teacher may draw from
the Sick Leave Bank:
Eligibility:
A teacher would become eligible to apply for sick bank days provided:
- The teacher is on tenured status and has been absent from work due to a medically
certifiable long-term illness or injury resulting in disability.
- The teacher has exhausted his/her sick leave accumulation.
- The teacher has applied for and has been granted the district's Long Term Illness
Coverage, and has used those allotted days.
Please note: It is imperative that you contact Jill Korwan at Fairfield if you are going to apply for
Long Term Illness. She is the Long Term Illness and Maternity Leave Chairperson.
Procedures:
- A teacher should apply to the MFT Sick Bank Committee when he/she applies to the district for
Long Term Illness Coverage.
- An applicant must submit the MFT sick bank application, a doctor's certification of illness, and
a copy of both pages of the district's Long Term Illness Form.
- Teachers can obtain an application for sick bank days from Janeen Signorile, Chairperson of the
Sick Bank Committee, at Birch Lane School, or from your building representative.
- The Sick Bank Committee will then meet to render a decision.
- If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.
In Unity,
Janeen Signorile
Sick Bank Chairperson
