Know Your Contract by Sue Miller

As you know, after our last contract, the District adopted a new program for teacher evaluation. During your first and second years of service, the minimum number of official observations is 6 per year and you can expect to receive 3 written evaluations. During the third year of service, the minimum number of official observations is 6 per year and you can expect to receive 2 written evaluations. For four years and beyond, the minimum number of official observations is 1 and you can expect to receive 1, written evaluation. An official observation at the secondary level is a full period, and at least 30 minutes at the elementary level./p>

You must receive advance notice before the first official observation of each school year and a preobservation conference must be held at least 1 day before the lesson. A post-observation conference must be held within 10 school days of the observation. A written observation report containing a narrative of the lesson followed by a list of strengths and weakness, if any, and a recommendation for improvement must be provided within 20 school days of the observation.

After the first observation, unannounced official observations can occur. The administrator must inform the teacher upon entering that she/he will be conducting an official observation. A post observation meeting must be held within 10 school days and a written observation report must be given to the teacher within 20 school days.

If there is reasonable evidence that a teacher's performance is unsatisfactory, a meeting must be scheduled with the teacher, administrator and MFT representative to discuss a plan of improvement. Teachers may append a response to any observation or evaluation that is to be placed in the personal file.

Lastly, additional visits to the classroom (affectionately known as the pop-in) may be conducted. If the administrator intends to write the specifics of the visit, the teacher shall be given the opportunity to meet with the administrator before the written material is placed in the teacher's personal file. The teacher may write a rebuttal, if they believe it is warranted.

In Unity,
Sue Miller
