Under a mentoring program developed four years ago by administrators and union leaders to increase retention, new teachers receive two years of hands-on mentoring under the watchful eyes of experienced educators in their subject areas. An estimated 300 new teachers have participated. The mentoring program earned a 2003 American Federation of Teachers-Saturn-United Auto Workers Partnership Award for the Kings Park TA, led by Russell Mathie, and administrators. Hamburg in Erie County was also among the six districts chosen from a pool of more than 10,000 applicants nationally, to receive the award for productive partnerships.
