High School (building representative - Connie Myers Kelly)
Seven faculty members are not the only new thing in our building this year. Faculty and administrators have worked together to create new course offerings for the 2007-2008 school year. Selected ninth grade students are participating in a transition program. The program targets students who have not been academically successful in the past. The combination of smaller class size and one on one attention from teachers Gail Dickerson, Marion Glauber, Charlie May, Amy Scuderi, and Terri Skeele, assistant Gayle Franklin and support from Vice Principal Dave Furletti is helping these students to succeed in their transition to high school. In addition to AP Calculus, seniors may now elect to take AP Statistics taught by Betty Wood. This course allows students with an affinity for math, another opportunity to earn college credit while still attending JD. Middle School (building representative - Pam Richardson)
Smart Technology - Many of our middle school teachers have completed SmartBoard training and are now using this technology in their classrooms. April Butler recently attended the 2007 Healthy Communities/Healthy Youth Conference on Rochester. The conference theme was Transforming Relationships: for the Common Good. April will chair the BLT Developmental Asset subcommittee in attempt to promote a greater understanding of the 40 Developmental Assets in our Building. In an effort to expand and coordinate community outreach programs our Administrators and Counselors meet weekly. They are developing an action plan to establish community based counseling, off site- parent conferences, and a presence in our school community neighborhoods. We are looking forward to the opening of the Klim Center at Springfield Gardens which will give us more opportunity to increase our community outreach. The JDMS Student Government representatives participated in leadership training and team building at Syracuse University in October. The council is presently sponsoring a canned food drive to benefit the Salvation Army. If you visit our building, help us out and bring a food item to further the cause! Congratulations to our Middle School Nurse Jill Hayward! Jill received a Board Recognition Award on November 5 th for her dedicated and diligent work in making sure all sixth graders met the new immunization regulations. Jamesville Elementary (building representative - MaryBeth Aloi)
Jamesville Elementary school just had a very successful open house. Parents and students had the opportunity to visit the students' classrooms and see all of the amazing work that has been accomplished since the beginning of the year. Open house is always a great way to build strong community relations. The teachers' hard work and dedication to the students was clearly shown on this special evening. Congratulations to first grade teacher Julie Butler. She and her husband had a new baby girl - Josephine 5 lbs 6 oz.! Moses DeWitt Elementary (building representative - Holly O'Brien)
Moses-DeWitt has gotten off to a great start for the 2007-2008 year. We have welcomed some new faces into the building this year. Among those, is Susan Horn. Susan has joined the Kindergarten team. Susan was previously in the building as a long tem substitute and is working on transitioning into having her own room. We have also welcomed Peter Smith as out new Principal. Peter has done a terrific job listening to our ideas and learning the traditions of Moses-Dewitt One change that Peter has made already this year was celebrating Moses DeWitt's birthday. Fourth grade students acted out a skit about Moses DeWitt and the whole school sang Happy Birthday to a wonderful cake that was crafted by Pat Belodoff, our art teacher. Pat also customized a lifelike tombstone with Moses' information. Pat's work was so great, the kids though that Mr. Smith had brought the actual gravestone to school! We are all excited about the new learning center that is opening soon at Springfield Gardens. This will provide a wonderful home and school connection to help our students be more successful at school. Congratulations to Michelle Call one of our first grade teachers who is out on a maternity leave. She had a beautiful baby boy in September. Tecumseh Elementary (building representative - Sue Fahey)
