Significant Union Events
A three- year contract for 1983-1984, 1984-1985 and 1985-1986 was approved
and ratified in September 1983.
Elimination of the Salary Step Schedule.
Significant Contract Changes
- Sick Leave- expanded to 12 days per school year; additional language permits
3 days of sick leave to be used for Family Illness.
- Teacher Work Year (previously Length of Year)- defines school year as
185 days, additional language calls for an additional school holiday at
Memorial Day weekend if no emergency closing days are used, language amended
to use the last two schedule days of school as teacher work days if all
180 required days are met.
- Length of Day-language amended to a teacher workday of 7 1/4 hours, including
a 35-minute duty free lunch period.
- Reduction in Force/Layoff-addition of language providing excessed teachers
with the option of continuing in the District's health plan at the teacher's
expense. Addition of language requiring Administration to offer vacancies
to teachers with the most seniority in the tenure area involved.
- Health Insurance-Drug Prescription Rider provision was eliminated.
- Merit Committee-new article providing for a committee to make recommendations
for a system to be used for additional salary increases based on consideration
of responsibilities and job performance.
- Salaries for Physical Education Centered Activities- pay for these activities
are a percentage of $12,468 in 1983-1984 and $14,610 in 1985-1986 based
on eight experience increments.
- Salaries for Co-curricular And Other Activities- new language added to
provide staff the opportunity to suggest new activities. Additional language
recognizing that some formal activities require payment of advisors and
some formal and informal activities are advised by teachers on a voluntary
basis, but that the Superintendent and the Association President will make
such determination mutually. Additional advisory positions were added at
the Senior High for the Senior High Musical, Italian Club, Chess Club, Hiking
Club, French Club, Service Club, National Honor Society,
German Club, Teenage Diplomat, Jazz Band, Spanish Club, Equinox Publication,
and Intramural Advisors. Additional advisory positions were added at the
Junior High for Geology Club, Talent Show, Jazz Band, Radio Club, Chess
Club, and Intramurals. An additional advisory position was added at the
Elementary level for Jazz Band.
- Administration and Correction of Competency Tests-new article added to
compensate teachers for the additional time and effort required of those
teachers who volunteer to administer and correct competency tests.
- Graduate/In-service Courses (previously Graduate Hours)-new language requiring
all teachers employed in the district to take at least 2 credits during
the length of the agreement. Addition of language providing salary increments
for each new block of 5 credit hours.
- Retirement Incentive-new article providing a monetary incentive to any
teacher, 55 years or older who is eligible to retire under the NYSTRS
- Salaries-to replace the step schedule, a percentage increase was implemented.
1982-1983 salaries were increased by 6.5% for 1983-1984; then by 8% for
1984-1985; and by 8.5% for 1985-1986. $497 would be paid for Masters and/or
Doctorate degrees. Minimum hiring salary in 1983 would be $14,349, in 1984
would be $15,282, and in 1985 would be $16,504.
