  • Earned recognition as a leader in her own community

These awards are presented at three levels of recognition: Silver (30 years of service), Gold (40 years of service), and Diamond (50 years of service).

2004 Recipient

Katrina Cartee Korpeck, GCTA retiree, was honored at the AFT National convention in Washington D.C. in 2004 as a recipient of a "Living Legacy Award". Katrina was Corresponding Secretary for the GCTA for many years while Tony LaMarca was president. She also served as president of the GCTA for a few years. One of the great achievements during her term was a contract that finally allowed the membership to have
direct deposit. Big milestone! Katrina was also a NYSUT and AFT delegate for most of her teaching years -- over 25 years with NYSUT and AFT.

After retiring from teaching, Katrina served as a delegate to the Retirement Conventions and she also served as editor of the newsletter for  NYSUT's retiree council 5.(The Viewpoint)  She was on the retiree committee that meets monthly representing the Election District locals.

The GCTA extends it congratulations to Katrina for this honor. Our members and leaders are proud to be associated with her and to have been and continue to be her colleague.

2002 Recipient

Jackie Trobia, GCTA retiree, was honored at the AFT National Convention in Las Vegas in 2002 as a recipient of a “Living the Legacy” Award. Jackie was awarded the Gold Recognition of this award. The awards were presented at the Women's Rights Award Breakfast on the final day of the convention. GCTA delegate, Susan Evans, accepted the award on Jackie's behalf, as Jackie was unable to attend the convention.

Jackie taught elementary students, predominantly sixth grade, for over thirty years in Gates Chili at the Thomas Edison School, the Paul Road School and the Middle School. She was an active member of the GCTA as a building representative, delegate to state and national meetings, negotiation committee and team member.

Since her retirement from teaching, she has remained active in her work with children and in the community by volunteering. Her volunteer work at the Red Cross, WXXI, and area schools are representative of the many other organizations in which she is still actively involved.

The GCTA extends it congratulations to Jackie for this honor. Our members and leaders are proud to be associated with her and to have been and continue to be her colleague.

NYSUT Volunteer Service Award

Each year NYSUT recognizes a member from each retiree council for their volunteer service to the community. Katrina Cartee Korpeck was nominated and selected for this award for her work on JCC committees, service on the Retiree Council 5, shopping for her brother-in-law. and her work on the newsletter, SeniorNet (seniors teaching seniors how to
use computers).

Katrina went to New York with Arlene Speares, Tom
Sullivan and Bill Ahearn to receive the award at a breakfast honoring the recipients of the award.
